⊠âthese people have gone missing inside the computer. But they canât be in the hardware â because they arenât seeing the hardware. They arenât surrounded by giant microchips and circuitry. And they canât be in the software because thatâs just instructions sending electricity to switches.â Azeem paused, now unsure whether his idea was dumb.
âSo where are they?â coaxed the professor gently.
âI was wondering if the fantasy land the computer operates exists somewhere.â
âOn another planet?â
âNot somewhere physical. More like â in the computerâs imagination.â
â⊠The problem is: whoever heard of a computer with an imagination?â
⊠Guy lifted the carpet and said curtly, âIâm taking that, if you donât mind.â
âDonât we need it to get to Blackskull?â asked Eileen.
âIt wonât hold all of us. So either we all walk to Blackskull or else one of us returns to the village and two take the carpet.â
âIâm going on the carpet,â said Mrs Watson in a tone that would take no argument. âHeâs my son.â
âIâm going,â said Inspector Cole. âThe law is on my side.â
âYou arenât the law in this country.â
â⊠This country happens to be inside the computer. The computer happens to be inside my district. Therefore the law still holds.â
âŠThe Cat House was halfway down a dark alley. The Mad Hatchets gathered at the end, prepping Dillon for his experience.
âHave you ever done this with a real woman before?â asked Archie.
âYeah, of course,â replied Dillon casually. âWell nearly. The girls on our estate will do anything. Theyâre pretty skanky in fact. You donât know where theyâve been so you darenât touch them. So I havenât really had the chance.â
⊠Dillon took a deep breath. âI donât think Iâm going back home.â
âWhat? Of course youâre going back home!â
He stood up and crossed to the window. Outside was the starry sky with the rind of new moonâŠ
âMum, I prefer it here. I like it here. I hate it back home. Everything back home is either boring or illegal. Iâm not able do the boring things, like school, and I wonât be allowed to do the illegal ones... And mum, thereâs even places to go where thereâs no one. Places that arenât owned by anybody. Where thereâs no one to chase you off. Iâve never ever even seen that back home. Thereâs always someone getting at you for being near their stuff. And everywhere is someoneâs stuff.â
âSo you want the easy life. Who doesnât? But what about us? How would we feel if you left us forever?â
âWould you care?â
⊠Harmony dreamed that night of being a princess. She had her own castle with a beautiful round room in a high tower. All the windows were stained glass and they looked north, south, east and west over a fair kingdom. She opened her eyes and had one of those moments when she knew she was still dreaming and had only imagined waking up. The bed she lay on was voluminous and soft. Morning light filtered through coloured glass, spilling onto the white, crisp bed sheets.
âOh Jesus,â she cursed. She really had woken up.
⊠Dillon found his dad slumped over the table where he had left him, drooling on the maps. Dillon had seen his dad sleeping many times before. Yet heâd never seen him look so tired. Dillon shook his shoulder. He looked up with bleary eyes.
âSon, youâre back.â
âI am. I found a way into the castle.â
âThatâs good son,â his dad replied with an exhausted smile. âThis virus, itâs getting bad. We donât have much time to get out.â
âI know, Dad.â
âBut weâre not going without your sister. We canât leave Harmony.â
âI donât want to leave her too, Dad.â
âItâs all of us together.â
âThatâs what I think too, Dad.â
âI know Iâve never been much use before, but Iâve been looking at these things all night. I have a plan, son...â
